On the surface, the Australian property portal market ended much the same way it started with realestate.com.au dominating the space and domain.com.au continuing to struggle in second place. We also had myhome.com.au come and go in the market while homehound.com.au and realestateview.com.au continue to show promise but with little headway. However, there were changes at the various players that could mean 2009 will be an interesting year.

Property portal realestate.com.au was recognised this week for being a leader in the Australian Information & Communications Technology industry with an award from growth partnership firm Frost & Sullivan.
domain.com.au Does Distribution Deal with ebay.com.au

Australia’s number 2 site, domain.com.au has just completed a content distribution deal with ebay.com.au that sees the launch of a new real estate section on ebay - ebay.domain.com.au.
The new site will be linked from the home page of ebay and expose the new site to ebay’s 5.4 million unique visitors per month.
What this means is that anyone who clicks on the real estate link on ebay.com.au will see the listings from agents advertising on domain.com.au presented on a co-branded site.
domain.com.au Launches Feature Home Alerts

domain.com.au in Australia has announced the launch of Feature Home Alerts. As the promition from domain.com.au says “A Feature Home Alert is an email that focuses entirely on one property that either matches or is based on the criteria you have indicated. It also contains significantly more information on the individual property than within a standard Home Alert.
There is no regular timing for a Feature Home Alert. Depending on how broad your Home Alert criteria is and how many different Home Alerts you may have set up, you may receive more than one Feature Home Alert per day, in addition to your standard Home Alert.”

realestatecommercial.com.au is the latest entry into the Australian commercial property portal market place. Launched in July 2008, the site is already gaining traction with 200+ agents using the site (although it is not clear how many are paying for the service).
However it has a long way to go to compete against the clear market leader, realcommercial.com.au - owned and operated by the REA Group, and second place, commercialrealestate.com.au.
IPMG May Be Looking to Sell homehound.com.au

It is rumoured that Independent Print Media Group may be looking to sell homehound.com.au - Australia’s third largest residential portal site.
homehound.com.au is the result of a partnership between the Independent Print Media Group (owned by Michael Hannan) and Property Page Pty Ltd (owned by Ray White, Raine & Horne, LJ Hooker and Century 21).
Over the last 12 months, homehound.com.au has dramatically increased traffic to the site from 213k UB’s in August 2007 to 427k UB’s in August 2008.

realestateview.com.au is Australia’s 4th largest property portal site, primarily focusing on the Victorian real estate market.
Founded in 2001, realestateview.com.au is a joint venture between the Real Estate Institute of Victoria and leading Victorian real estate agents.
realestateview.com.au focuses primarily on advertising Victorian properties but also offers other property related internet services for agents such as research data and a multi-loading system that allows agents to upload their data once and have it distributed to a number of the major independent portals.

myhome.com.au is a recent entrant to the Australian property portal landscape. Launched in 2007 as a joint venture by Publishing & Broadcasting Limited (PBL) and Microsoft, the site promised take on the encumbents realestate.com.au and domain.com.au at their own game.
However after only 1 year and investment of over $20m in building and marketing the business, the business was sold to Shane Dale of Surroundpix for a reported $1.5m.
myhome.com.au continues to operate in the Australian market and is estimated to be in 5th place.

homehound.com.au is the 3rd most popular site in the Australian market and promotes itself as the industry owned site that takes a simplistic ‘google-esque’ approach to searching for property.
homehound.comau has undergone rapid growth in UB’s over the last year and now has 420k+ unique visitors to the site each month. However this is still 12% of the traffic to the market leading realestate.com.au.

Nielsen NetRatings recently released it figures for the Australian residential property portal market for August 2008.
The results show that realestate.com.au continues to be the dominant player in the Australian market with 4.2m unique browsers in August compared to the number 2 player in the market, domain.com.au that had only 1.9m unique browsers.
71% of people looking at the Australian real estate market at least looked at realestate.com.au while 32% at least looked at domain.com.au. Note: browsers of the real estate category do look at more than one site.
