Welcome to the first instalment of our PPW Awards series, where we highlight portals from established, emerging and early-stage markets around the world that have an innovative approach to running a successful property portal.

Each instalment will highlight one overall winner and one honourable mention. Today’s winners come from the established market of Western Europe.

Overall Winner: zoopla.co.uk

Who they are: UK portal zoopla.co.uk was launched in January 2008 and has since established a significant presence in the market, claiming an average monthly total of more than 4 million unique visitors.

Why we chose them: In just three years, zoopla.co.uk has managed to carve out a place among the top three portals in a market dominated by rightmove.co.uk. What stands out as particularly innovative about the portal is its aim to engage with homeowners on a continuous basis. By listing every home in the UK, zoopla.co.uk can connect owners to local agents when they consider moving and provide targeted appraisal leads via its AskAnAgent tool, as well as provide applicant leads for existing inventory.

Honourable Mention: booli.se

Who they are: booli.se is a Swedish real estate search engine that launched in late 2007. The business is part of the Firm Factory Network of startups, and says its aim is to keep the consumer in focus.

Why we chose them: While booli.se is just a small team of six people taking on market giant hemnet.se, they are doing so by trying to offer as many useful consumer tools as possible. The website’s most useful offering from a user perspective is its broker guide, which displays brokers’ market share, the number of listings each broker has, and their median listing prices.

Tune in later this week when we reveal our next set of PPW Award winners.

Dear Alice,

Really enjoy your work.

In your comment:
“By listing every home in the UK, zoopla.co.uk can connect owners to local agents when they consider moving and provide targeted appraisal leads via its AskAnAgent tool, as well as provide applicant leads for existing inventory.” how can Zoopla be sure to have every listing please?

Best wishes,
Rhys

Hi Rhys,

Thanks for your comment. I’ve asked zoopla.co.uk to respond to your query, however their website states that its data comes from “publicly available sources such as Land Registry or Registers of Scotland and is supplemented with data provided by users of the Zoopla community.”

Zoopla have done amazing over the three years, I think that FindaProperty’s chief executive also went over to Zoopla recently. They are clearly the biggest threat to rightmove at the moment who have dominated for so long. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next three years.
I can’t however see any contenders to break into the top three at the moment.

Zoopla, honestly never heard of the portal before and never seen it is the search engines. Has anybody ever advertised overseas properties on there? If so, what is the response like and how much do you pay each month? Would be interested to find out more about them.
