Rent or Buy? trulia.com Index Advises

trulia.com is underscoring its stance as the “smart real estate search to help you make better decisions” with the launch of a new rent vs buy index.

trulia.com created its price-to-rent ratio using the average list price compared with average rent on two bedroom apartments, condos and town house listings. Then, after analysing the results for the 50 most populous US cities, trulia.com came up with the top 10 cities to buy vs rent, and the top 10 cities to rent vs buy.

According to the index, Minneapolis is the top city to buy rather than rent, while New York is the best place to rent rather than buy. inman.com reports that there are currently no plans to expand the index to include other property types or sizes, or to break the data down further by neighbourhood.

The release of the index follows on from the addition of user-generated reviews to trulia.com’s local area ratings at the beginning of May.

According to Hitwise figures, trulia.com is the sixth most popular real estate website in the US. The search engine recently said it saw an average of 6.7 million unique visitors per month in Q1 this year, along with a 50 percent increase in visits year-on-year and a 99 percent increase in property views.
