A Different Story from comScore

January traffic data from comScore still puts The Digital Property Group’s portals in second place in the UK, but it tells a slightly different story to the one we’re used to seeing in the US.

A statement from TDPG says UK market leader rightmove.co.uk had 3.93 million unique visitors for the month, which is up from its December total of 2.62 million. The de-dupicated total for TDPG’s network of websites – primelocation.com, findaproperty.com, globrix.com, and findanewhome.com – is put at 3.78 million.

comScore has zoopla.co.uk, which has previously claimed second place amongst UK property portals, at a total of 1.72 million unique visitors. This is still up from the total of 992,000 seen in December. zoopla.co.uk has just held its first online auction, and says it has had over 75,000 visitors to the new auction section and more than 1,000 potential buyers register.

Meanwhile, in the US, comScore has the homes.com and forrent.com network at number three in the market, ahead of zillow.com.

According to figures released by homes.com, comScore’s top five US real estate websites for January were the Move network, realestate.yahoo.com, the homes.com and forrent.com network, zillow.com, and realestate.msn.com.

This ranking is very different to the list produced by Hitwise for January, which has zillow.com at number three, homes.com at number seven, and realestate.msn.com at number nine. forrent.com is well down the list at number 17.

If nothing else, the differences between these rankings reveal just how much variance there can be between the conclusions of two web analytics companies, depending on their methods of measurement and the way they classify and group websites.
