rightmove.co.uk’s Busiest Ever Day

rightmove.co.uk has reported another new website record with its busiest ever day for site traffic.

rightmove.co.uk says it served 22,533,164 pages on Tuesday 6 August, topping the website’s previous record which was set in March 2008.

The news came in a week that saw the market leading UK portal release a free iPhone app, which has already reached the number one ranking on the iTunes App Store.

Commercial Director Miles Shipside commented:

“In the housing market it’s crazy to have your busiest day ever in the height of the holiday season. If we were selling ice creams I could understand it, but this clearly shows ongoing interest in buying property. We have been reporting a shortage of fresh properties coming to the market since the beginning of the year, and the result is that potential buyers are searching harder to find the new stock and the best buys”.

globrix.com, zoopla.co.uk, DPG and propertyindex.com have all released similar statements in the last week, showing increased traffic to their websites, which appears to bode well for the UK market.

These news releases are getting more and more banal.
how about number of leads sent?
    for buyers?
    For rental enquiries?
is it the same level of increase?

As media reports continue to allege the property market is in a very early stage of recovery along with property prices going up.

Quick comparison of rightmove.co.uk,findaproperty.com,propertyfinder.com,zoopla.co.uk and globrix.com over the last 6 months.

    http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/rightmove.co.uk+propertyfinder.com+findaproperty.com

    Traffic Rank and Reach
Clearly see right move is still clearly preordained leader with the lion’s share of traffic ranking and reach.
What’s very interesting is how findaproperty and PF have remained the same in traffic rank for quite a while. There is a real neck and neck battle going on between Zoopla and Globrix.com over last 6 months with Zoopla marginally piping them at the start of August.

    Percent of global page views
    1Rightmove 2 FAP 3 PF 4 Zoopla and 5 Globrix
What’s interesting here is if you look and this over the last month July in particular; you can see how PF , Zoopla and propertyfinder are amalgamating with no clear leader.

Percentage of page views per individual
    1Rightmove 2 FAP 3 PF 4Zoopla and 5 Globrix
What’s interesting here is that although RM remains no1 tracking back from January it has gradually dropped where as the other three have remained within their boundaries either spiking much higher from January to the start of August .Globrix was playing catch up with FAP, PF and Zoopla ; though its levels has significantly picked up over July which can be clearly seen.

    Bounce
Sustained bounce went up considerable for RM over six moves but was reined back by August. Zoopla on the other hand was markedly reduced during the 6 months , creeping midterm though finishing well below January start and being the only one to do so. .Globrix bounce remained quite level neither spiking or troughs remains roughly the same as Jan figures. PF had some bounce clearly seen during a large spike in July (maybe attributed to news of MBO and REA selling) which and not seen a reduction in start of August . FAP bounce was reduced on and off with heavy troughs though has crept back to Jan levels .
I must emphasise this is not hard quantitave data and prime location was not added; Alexa only allows 5 urls which may have also changed these results. Also Pl is part of DMG so I choose FAP as its traffic rankings are higher out of the two. By no means are these results definitive just correlations.

And yes well done to all five portals again; more choice and variety to the agent and user and it keeps everyone else on their toes.

Why is it crazy to have your busiest day in the holiday season? People are off work so they have time to surf the net, it was raining last Tuesday after all! Unlikely they are serious buyers though and there will always be “an ongoing interest in buying property” when wasn’t there in the UK, we are nation of property junkies! I agree with Snoop these press releases are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Alexa is such a small sample given how many UK toolbars they have I wouldnt give those numbers much cred.

    Thanks Amul.

I find Alexa dramatically more reliable than comScore in showing the performance of our site. The only problem with Alexa is that it is easier to ‘game’ than comScore. i.e. artificially inflate your Alexa rank through installing the toolbar.

Google Trends for websites is showing promise.

Alexa better than commscore? no way in the world mate.

While commscore is no bible, alexa’s open access makes it a joke.

There are many many ways to fool alexa.

From plain old click fraud through bots and cheap labor to company reps installing alexa toolbar on the clients pc’s.

Its actually sad that alexa even get a mention in our industry.
