myroof.co.za Competes in Tough Market
May 11, 2009 by Alice Allan

Property portal myroof.co.za was launched in October 2008 to list private property for sale and rent in South Africa. The website charges private sellers a one off listing fee that can be paid once their property has been sold.
Recently, myroof.co.za added laser drawn floor plans to enhance its listings, claiming to be the first South African property website to do so. In a press release, marketing director Gert van der Walt explained: “When buyers go online to look for property, they need more than just pictures to find what they want. A floor plan brings the pictures together, and tells a lot more about the property at a single glance.”
A recent post on the myrof.co.za blog outlines the harsh economic conditions currently influencing South African real estate, stating that the number of employed agents has more than halved, leaving large agencies to compete for a share of the market.
myroof.co.za competes with a number of subscription based South African portals such as sa-properties.com, sahometraders.co.za, and myproperty.co.za, which is partnered with MSN Property.

- Times are Tough, Portals Should Tighten their Belts
The credit crunch and the collapse of the financial markets can only mean one thing - the days of easy access to funding is well and truly over. In a recent article on cnet titled "VC's throw cold water on portfolio companies", VC's and angel investors are giving their portfolio companies a clear message - prepare for the worst. So what sort of preparation as they talking about? They are suggesting cutting marketing costs, reducing G&A costs and even laying off staff. The way angel investor Ron Conway put it in a letter to his portfolio companies is "This is the equivalent to "raising an internal round" through cost reductions to buy you more time until you need to raise money again; hopefully when fund raising is more feasible." Therefore what does this mean for the property portal sites around the world?...

MyRoof.co.za works on a once off listing fee, starting at R445. Your property can stay on the site until it is sold. There is no commission due.
Actually, myroof.co.za was not the first portal in the country to offer floor plans. Privateproperty.co.za have had floor plans and virtual tours as an optional feature for their property listings since October 2008. New functionality is being introduced later this week on their website which will allow users to share virtual tours and floor plans on other websites.
Privateproperty.co.za is the buesiet property website in SA, and also offers sellers the option to include a video tour, with a descriptive voice-over, and they were the first property website in the country to introduce real time online auctions.
