UK Web Traffic On The Up?

January 21, 2009 by Emma Sorensen

In the UK, market leading property portal rightmove.co.uk and search engine globrix.com have both reported increased website traffic in January.

rightmove.co.uk claims that their leads more than doubled on Monday 5 January, the first full working day of the new year, compared with the same day in 2008. This has continued with 429,560 in the first two weeks of this month compared with 199,762 last year.

The Financial Times has reported it as a surge in “window shoppers”.

Interestingly, the surge in interest for browsing and enquiring about property does not seem to be matched by a willingness to sell. The portal has also reported that the number of new instructions in January is less than half of those in January 2008. January 2008 saw 89,000 to while January 2009 has only seen 43,000.

Meanwhile globrix.com have also announced record traffic over the first few weeks of January.

“In the first fortnight of 2009 we have had traffic levels on a par with what we would usually see over an entire month,” the company revealed on its blog.

Increased interest in browsing online certainly seems to be something of a trend, but it remains to be seen if the traffic and leads translate into sales and more listings.
