Competition in New Home Portals

December 16, 2008 by Emma Sorensen

findanewhome.com has overtaken previous UK market leader smartnewhomes.com as the most-visited new homes portal according to Hitwise figures from November.

Hitwise say that in November findanewhome.com received 5.6% more visits than smartnewhomes.com.

The two leading new home portals are owned by rival newspaper groups.

findanewhome.com is part of the Digital Property Group’s network of websites, owned by the Daily Mail group, which includes primelocation.com, findaproperty.com and homesandproperty.co.uk.

The Digital Property Group are actively keeping each of their four portals separate from in an attempt to retain the differentiated market segments. This month they introduced a new “value based” pricing structure that runs across all four websites and encourages agents to advertise on all portals.

smartnewhomes.com is owned by another publisher, Trinity Mirror plc, who also own email4property.co.uk and fish4.co.uk. It attracts more than 1 million searches per month.

Both these new home portals face competition from others including newhomesforsale.co.uk, a non-newspaper owned player in the new home portal market. It is independently owned by Property Papers Ltd, a publisher of New Homes magazines since 1998, which has published the website commercially since 2005.
